Weeks of truth for Lucien Favre and his men

BVB coach Lucien Favre will not be bored in the coming weeks.

A mammoth program is waiting for BVB. The Dortmund team cannot win any titles in the weeks leading up to the international break – it is much more about not losing everything.

Dortmund won six of seven games in the second half of the Bundesliga, plus the first leg of the Champions League round of 16 against Paris Saint-Germain. In the championship, Lucien Favre’s team was four points behind Bayern Munich, who also had to give up only once – in the 0: 0 against RB Leipzig, who is currently ranked second. In the Champions League, Bayern are also on course after their 3-0 away win at Chelsea and, unlike BVB, Bayern also delivered in the cup and are in the semi-finals.

Back to Dortmund. Lucien Favre’s team has to compete at Borussia Mönchengladbach on Saturday, and the return leg at PSG on Wednesday. And another three days later there is a duel against Schalke 04, the eternal arch rival. Before the international break, the game at Wolfsburg is also on the program. In order not to lose all title chances, the Dortmunders must not afford to slip. However, the hurdle is quite high.

If it works, Favre is in the shadow of the players

If BVB keeps a clean sheet in these games, the duel against Bayern Munich on April 4 would also become more explosive. Dortmund has not lost a single home game this season …

One thing is also clear: if the Dortmund feathers fail, then Lucien Favre will again become the target of the critics. The Swiss can currently breathe deeply, the coverage of his person has decreased. His protégés, especially Erling Haaland and Jadon Sancho, make headlines, which are in excellent shape and cause a sensation. And of course also new winter entry Emre Can, who is attested to have stabilized the team. There is hardly any mention of Favre’s share of the success. Too bad.

The most successful Dortmund coaches (points per game)

  • Thomas Tuchel (2.12) – 107 games (2015 – 2017)
  • Lucien Favre (2.06) – 80 games * (2018 – open)
  • Willi Multhaup (2) – 44 games (1965 – 1966)
  • Jürgen Klopp (1.9) – 318 games (2008 – 2015)
  • Ottmar Hitzfeld (1.86) – 273 games (1991 – 1997)

* As of March 5, 2020
