Because the negative news often dominates NU.nl, the positive news sometimes snows under. That is why we list cheerful messages. With this week: public transport rejoices two groups of travelers and the Animal Protection about 175 dogs. The happiest individual of the week is spinal cord injury patient Gert-Jan Oskam, who can move his legs again thanks to a breakthrough.
380 new plant and animal species discovered in Southeast Asia
The first good news of the week followed from Southeast Asia early on Monday. There, scientists announced that they had discovered 380 new plant and animal species in the past two years.
The plants and animals live in the basin of the Mekong River. It concerns 290 plants, 19 fish, 24 amphibians, 46 reptiles and one mammal. You can see some pictures of the animals here.
Public transport delights Amsterdam primary school children and Berlin enthusiasts
Good news followed twice from the public transport corner. For example, it first became clear that Amsterdam primary school children, aged four to eleven, can travel for free for four months this summer on public transport in the city.
This concerns the buses, trams and metros of the transport company GVB. The period starts from July 22. The children must travel with an adult. The initiative should make it “go without saying” that every family can easily travel around the neighborhood and city.
On Thursday, a regular sleeper train departed from Amsterdam to Berlin for the first time since 2014. Actually, that should have happened last year, but there were not enough sleeping cars. Next year, the train should also be able to reach the Czech Republic.
The Dutch are the first spinal cord injury patient worldwide to enjoy a breakthrough
Gert-Jan Oskam can walk through his house independently, get out of the car and have a drink standing up at the bar. At first glance, this is not striking, but the forty-year-old Dutchman has had a spinal cord injury since 2011.
In 2016, Oskam participated in a study into new technology to teach spinal cord injury patients to walk again. Through implants in his spinal cord and brain, his body can now send the right signals again so that he can activate his leg muscles to walk. It is the first time the technology has been applied to a human.
