Bangkok — Thailand and Canada have expressed willingness to expand bilateral and multilateral cooperation, particularly in the areas of trade, investment and tourism, as both countries have capabilities in these areas. The two countries also expressed their commitment to foster ties between them ASEAN and Canada for a future strategic partnership. Thai Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha officially welcomed his Canadian counterpart Justin Trudeau and held bilateral talks. This was the first visit by a Canadian head of state to Thailand since 10 years.
Gen Prayut said Thailand and Canada have always maintained friendly relations and that the Canadian head of state’s visit will strengthen ties between the two countries. According to the Prime Minister of Thailand, economic cooperation should be strengthened through trade and investment in target industries that fall under the Bio-Circular-Green economic model (BCG) fallen, to be removed. Thailand, meanwhile, is ready to support negotiations to establish an ASEAN-Canada free trade area.
The Canadian prime minister also praised Thailand’s alignment APEC 2022 and the Kingdom’s commitment to women’s rights, and expressed confidence in the development of Thai-Canadian relations. (NNT)
