There is no cake on the Bergweg in Hilversum, only long faces. The stupid politics and lack of a dedicated station manager at Radio 10 seems to be paying off for two of Talpa’s three radio stations. Direct competitor JOE, which stole the best FM package from Radio 10 in the frequency auction, rises above two stations from the John de Mol radio group.
Sky Radio and Radio 10 both lose listeners and listening time, with JOE recording significantly longer listening time. Both Talpa stations changed their music policy after the arrival of DPG’s Greatest Hits oldie station, programming more classics and less new music. Radio 10’s programming has also undergone a major overhaul, due to the departure of Gerard Ekdom and Rob van Someren, but also due to the introduction of the ‘more music’ formula. Although the oldest rule in the radio handbook is always: ‘Don’t be better, be different’. Do they opt for JOE’s old classics and safe content? Then we don’t do that at 10 and we offer a different mix of music and more interesting things.
The loss for the entire Talpa radio group adds up to 1%, so the damage is not too bad. Hopefully JOE’s big jump above is a distorted picture due to the holiday season, but there are obviously concerns about the arrival and success of this direct competitor. Qmusic once again take the top spot with their Summer Top 500, which also impressed Sky and 538.
NPO Radio 2 is falling, probably because there is no regular morning and evening show, but also because of a change in listening behavior related to holidaymakers. NPO Radio 1 is making a big profit thanks to the Olympic Games and the Dutch gold. NPO 3FM also makes a slight advantage due to a slightly longer listening time. NPO Radio 5 loses 0.4%.
