Webb Telescope Discovers Barred Spiral Galaxy ‘Ceers-2112’ Formed Soon After the Big Bang

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA-Until now, it was believed that spiral galaxies like the Milky Way could not be observed before the universe reached half of its current age, namely 13.8 billion years. But now, scientists have used the James telescope Webb to find galaxy the furthest barred spiral to date.

Huge distances in space work differently than you might imagine. When a celestial body is very far away, we observe it as before because the light takes a lot of time to reach us. For example, if we observe something one light year away, we will see it as it was a year ago because the light from that object took one year to reach us.

The new galaxy discovered by scientists, called ceers-2112, formed soon after the Big Bang. Ceers-2112 has a straight bar-shaped line in the middle. The galactic bar is a structure made of stars within a galaxy. Although bars can be found in non-spiral galaxies, they are quite rare as they are more common in spiral galaxies.

“Almost all bars are found in spiral galaxies. “The constraints on ceers-2112 show that galaxies mature and organize much more quickly than we previously thought, which means some aspects of our theories of galaxy formation and evolution need to be revised,” said Alexander de la Vega, one of the authors of the research paper published in the journal Nature as reported on the page Indian ExpressTuesday (13/11/2023).

According to de la Vega, the lines in ceers-2112 mean that galaxies can mature and organize much more quickly than scientists believed. This means that some theories of galaxy formation and evolution need to be revised.

Astronomers’ previous understanding led them to believe that it would take billions of years for galaxies to become orderly enough to turn into forbidden galaxies. However, the discovery of ceers-2112 overturned this assumption. This shows that bars can form in a very short time, namely within a billion years or even less. Galaxy bars will form in spiral galaxies with regularly rotating stars.
