CAPE CANAVERAL, KOMPAS.TV – The Webb Space Telescope commemorates the one year anniversary of the cosmic shoot with one of its finest images: the dramatic shadows of dozens of stars at their birth.
NASA showed this new snapshot Wednesday (12/7/2023), revealing 50 baby stars in a space cloud complex 390 light years away.
This region is relatively quiet, but full of bright gas, hydrogen jets, and even a dust cocoon with the soft start of more stars.
All of these young stars appear to be no bigger than our sun. Scientists say this stunning image provides the best clarity on the brief phases of a star’s life.
“Our sun itself went through a phase like this, long ago, and now we have the technology to see the beginnings of other star stories,” said Klaus Pontoppidan, who served as the project scientist, in a statement.
This cloud complex, known as the Rho Ophiuchi, is the closest star-forming region to Earth. With no stars in front of the photo, NASA noted that the details are more visible.

According to NASA, some stars cast shadows indicating the possibility of planets in the process of forming.
Webb, the largest and most powerful astronomical observatory ever launched into space, has been producing beautiful images of the cosmos over the past year. The first images from the $10 billion infrared telescope were revealed in July last year, six months after it launched from French Guiana.
This telescope is considered the successor to the Hubble Space Telescope, which orbits the Earth for 33 years. Webb, as a joint effort by NASA and the European Space Agency, is scanning the universe from a greater distance, as far as 1 million miles (1.6 million kilometers) from Earth.
