Weather week ahead: very mixed weather in the north, stormy in the south

By Gilles MATRICON, meteorologist

At the end of June and the beginning of July, France is located between the disturbed British current and the high pressure of the Azores which goes up towards Italy. It is therefore a changing time, contrasting according to the regions that awaits us.

North of the Loire, the clouds often have the advantage with a few showers, especially along the English Channel where the feeling is autumn. In the south, the sun is more present, but the heat will become heavy and a stormy evolution is expected from Wednesday from the Pyrenees to the Massif Central.

Hesitant start to the week

Monday, after a very nebulous morning with a few scattered rains from the Aquitaine basin to the Alps until Alsace, the thinnings will be necessary, later from the Vosges to the Alps.

Mardi will be the most beautiful day of the week on a national scale, with full sun and the return of heat to the south of the Loire. Near the English Channel, the clouds will remain abundant and may let escape a few showers from Brittany and from the Normandy coasts to Hauts-de-France. From the Pays de la Loire to the Charentes to the Grand Est, despite the fairly numerous clouds, the weather will remain dry.

Thunderstorms Wednesday and Thursday to the south

Wednesday, the northern regions will remain under the clouds with a few showers from Pays-de-la-Loire to Hauts-de-France. From the Pyrenees to the Alps, the heat will turn to a thunderstorm in the afternoon, especially in the mountains. Between these two areas, you are guaranteed to stay dry from the Charentes to the Grand Est to the Jura. Near the Mediterranean, the weather will be fine, despite the appearance of a few low clouds brought by the Sea wind.

Thursday will be the most volatile day of the week. Unstable weather is expected in all of our regions. As close as possible to the disturbed British current, some rainy passages are expected north of the Loire. In the south, thunderstorm activity promises to be strong with a risk of hailstorms from Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes to Alsace.

Friday, the Azores anticyclone should return and bring a clear improvement, in the west with broad thinnings. From Alsace to Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, the sky will be more hesitant with a risk of residual rain, rather at the end of the day.

Contrasting temperatures between north and south

Under the northern clouds, temperatures will show a seasonal level, around 22 to 24 ° C in the afternoons. It will be cooler near the English Channel because of the showers and an often very sensitive west wind. The 20 ° C mark will often be difficult to reach. In the south, the heat will increase Tuesday with 27 to 30 ° C, up to 30 to 34 ° C peak in the Mediterranean hinterland. On Wednesday, the highs will frequently reach 29 to 34 ° C in the south, in an atmosphere which will become increasingly heavy and before thunderstorms. On Thursday and Friday, temperatures will drop to the south, reaching the seasonal averages. They will be stationary in the north.
