- Weather service warns of severe heat stress
- Little cooling at night, especially in the city
- Up to 40 degrees expected in western Germany
The current heat wave has reached the state of Bremen. At the beginning of the week, the German Weather Service (DWD) issued an official heat warning for the entire federal state. A so-called strong heat load is expected on Tuesday from 11 a.m. to probably 7 p.m. The experts also expect little cooling at night, especially in densely built-up urban areas in Bremen and Bremerhaven.
Heatwaves like the ones we are about to face again pose a major risk to human health.
Tobias Fuchs, Director of Climate and Environment at the DWD.

–The weather service distinguishes between two warning levels for heat warnings – warnings of severe heat stress and warnings of extreme heat stress. The basis is the so-called felt temperature, which describes the heat perception of people taking into account air temperature, humidity, wind speed and solar radiation. If the perceived temperature is over 38 degrees Celsius, a warning of extreme heat stress is issued. With perceived temperatures between 32 and 38 degrees Celsius, the DWD warns of severe heat stress, provided that there is a stressful situation at night and the severe heat stress lasts for at least two days.
Southern Europe has been suffering from extreme heat for days
Large parts of southern Europe have been sweating for days with high temperatures and blazing sunshine. The highest heat warning level applies in western France, forest fires are raging on the Atlantic coast. Italy expects another heat wave. On Tuesday, temperatures above 35 degrees will be reached nationwide, up to 40 degrees in the west, as the DWD announced. The farmers’ association is already warning of losses in the harvest if it doesn’t rain soon.
In view of the expected weather conditions, the Marburger Bund medical association is calling for a national heat protection plan and an information campaign.
Politicians must significantly expand their efforts to take protective measures during heat waves.
Susanne Johna, Chairwoman of the Marburger Bund

–Cities and municipalities need heat protection plans so that senior citizens’ facilities or hospitals can better prepare for heat waves, “best regulated by a national heat protection plan”.
