Weather – Record: it was over 50 degrees in Australia

Hot. Very very hot, even. The temperature exceeded this Thursday the 50 degrees at Onslow, a small seaside resort at some 1400 kilometers north of Perth, on the west coast of Australia. AT 14 h 26, the thermometer has indicated 50.7 degrees. The country’s record is thus equaled and it dates back more than 60 year. The same temperature had been mesurée in January 1960 in Oodnadatta, in Lhinterland of theSouth Australia.

The extreme heat reached this Thursday is due to a lack of thunderstorm activity causing an accumulation ofhot air along the coast, Explain ABC Australia. The average temperature in Onslow at this time is 36.5 degrees.

The BBC notes for its part that this record should be beaten tomorrow because the temperatures should still slightly increase. As of Saturday, however, the heat should ease a little. Et adds: «lheat waves are becoming more likely and extreme due to climate change induced by theman.»

The official world temperature record remains held by Furnace Creek in the vDeath Alley, California: 56.7 degrees on the 10th July 1913.
