Offenbach / Lingen (dpa) – After it repeatedly delivered conspicuous, possibly incorrect measurements, the weather station of the German Weather Service (DWD) is to be relocated to Lingen. In addition, testing of the temperature measurement at the station was announced. There were striking differences between measurements of maximum air temperature in Lingen and other DWD stations in Emsland, the DWD said on Friday. As of Friday evening, the station’s values will no longer be published.
“The quality of our measurements has the highest priority. We have decided not to publish the observation data of the Lingen station, but to use it only internally for scientific tests,” said Jürgen Schreiber, Technical Director of the DWD. If it turns out during the test that the values measured in Lingen are not certain, this would also have an impact on the historic German heat record: On July 25, 2019, 42.6 degrees had been measured in Lingen.
Construction work on the new location in the Lingen area has already started. The move had been planned anyway. The DWD operates around 2,000 measuring stations nationwide.
