Offenbach (dpa/lhe) – The foothills of the storm “Zeynep” mainly affected the north of Hesse on Saturday night. According to the German Weather Service (DWD), wind speeds of up to 132 kilometers per hour were measured in Frankenberg (Waldeck-Frankenberg district) in the first half of the night.
In Lautertal im Vogelsberg, gusts of 124 kilometers per hour were registered, in Homberg (Ohm) around 30 kilometers away, 116 kilometers per hour. On Hesse’s highest mountain – the 950 meter high Wasserkuppe in the Rhön – the wind blew at times at 119 kilometers per hour.
In southern and central Hesse, however, the foothills of the low were less noticeable, according to a DWD meteorologist. However, a cold front passing through late Friday afternoon caused strong winds there. For example, gusts of wind with a speed of 122 kilometers per hour were measured at Frankfurt Airport.
Overall, “Zeynep” in Hesse was “a bit stronger” than “Ylenia” on Thursday night, said the meteorologist on Saturday in Offenbach. From 118 kilometers per hour, meteorologists speak of a hurricane gust.
