Offenbach (dpa / lsw) – With chilly temperatures and a lot of snow on the heights, winter has returned in Baden-Württemberg. Despite the warnings from the police and weather services, the cold came as a surprise to many motorists: on Saturday night alone, the Mannheim police headquarters registered around 50 accidents on slippery roads. And it remains wintry: It should snow across the board on Sunday night, as a spokesman for the German Weather Service (DWD) said on Saturday. In the lowlands, he assumes a thinner snow cover of one to five centimeters. In contrast, up to 15 centimeters of fresh snow are expected in the Black Forest and on the Swabian Alb.
According to the DWD, it will be coldest in the southeast with lows of up to minus 7 degrees on Sunday night. But even during the day it remains frosty with temperatures around minus 5 degrees on the Swabian Alb and in the Black Forest. Persistent ice is to be expected, especially in the east and south-east. In Mannheim, on the other hand, the temperatures climbed into the slightly plus range.
While the snowfall in the rest of the country slowly started around noon, winter had already set in between Mannheim and Karlsruhe last night. According to the DWD, there was up to 20 centimeters of fresh snow in the Palatinate, and in Mannheim the snow cover reached 15 centimeters.
According to the DWD, on Sunday it will gradually get warmer and the snowfall weaker: “There may still be a few flakes at noon,” said the spokesman. At the beginning of the week, mild air came from the Mediterranean region to Baden-Württemberg. That means: little precipitation, but also no bright sunshine. Only in the mountains can temperatures around freezing be expected, said the expert.
