Hannover (dpa / lni) – The massive onset of winter has largely transformed the center and south of Lower Saxony into a white winter landscape with a blanket of snow up to 50 centimeters thick. Locally, the snow masses could pile up even higher due to drifts, said Manno Peters, meteorologist with the German Weather Service, on Monday in Hamburg. In Braunlage in the Harz Mountains, the DWD registered a snow depth of almost 50 centimeters at a station on Monday afternoon – until Saturday morning it was only 16 centimeters.

There was also a lot of snow in the lowlands: Münster / Osnabrück Airport reported 22 centimeters of snow. The station in Alfeld an der Leine also recorded so much. 37 centimeters of snow fell in Bramsche (Osnabrück district). “That’s quite a blockbuster,” said Peters. Otherwise, the southwest would actually be one of the warmer areas of Lower Saxony. Bad Münder am Deister, like Bad Harzburg, registered more than 30 centimeters.

For the time being, according to the DWD, there is still no end to the snow drift in sight: In particular in the south of Lower Saxony between Harz and Solling, there should be more snowfall until Tuesday morning – another 15 centimeters of fresh snow could then come there according to the forecast. “Then it is all over,” said Peters. Individual snowfalls are then still on the way along the Elbe and on the East Frisian North Sea coast.
