Weather – Offenbach am Main – Despite a lot of sunshine: Bavaria 2020 coolest state – Bavaria

Munich / Offenbach (dpa / lby) – According to initial results, Bavaria was by far the coolest federal state in 2020 – although the year in Germany was the second warmest since records began. The average temperature in the Free State was 9.5 degrees Celsius, as the German Weather Service (DWD) announced on Wednesday in Offenbach after a preliminary evaluation. The nationwide lowest annual temperature was measured on December 27th in Oberstdorf (Oberallgäu district) and was -15 degrees Celsius.

The Bavarians, however, were spoiled with sun anyway: With almost 1965 hours of sunshine, the Free State took second place. Only the neighbors in Baden-Württemberg got more sun with almost 2053 hours.

Bavaria is also in second place in terms of wetness, although snowfalls and severe frosts were rare in this year’s winter months. In August, continuous precipitation caused floods and floods in southern Bavaria. The municipality of Aschau im Chiemgau (district of Rosenheim) reported the highest daily rainfall in 2020 in Germany at 152.4 liters per square meter on August 3.

Nationwide, the average temperature this year was 10.4 degrees, just below the record year 2018, in which the average temperature was 10.5 degrees. “The very warm year 2020 must not leave us cold,” said Tobias Fuchs, DWD’s Climate Director. “Climate protection is the order of the day. We have to act now.”
