Offenbach (dpa / lhe) – The year 2020 in Hesse was too warm and too dry. The annual mean temperature was 10.4 degrees and was thus 2.2 degrees above the mean of the internationally valid reference period from 1961 to 1990, as the German Weather Service (DWD) announced on Wednesday in Offenbach after an initial evaluation. The drought was problematic again, the target of 793 liters per square meter was clearly missed with almost 644 liters.
Even in spring there was no rain, and the sun was often shining. “Significant rainfall and thus a slight relaxation of the drought situation only brought June and August,” said the DWD. In autumn it was clearly too dry again.
There was no shortage of sunshine, the target of 1459 hours far exceeded the year with 1860. Hesse experienced the second sunniest – but also much too dry – spring. The summer month of August lived up to its name and brought heat. It was 37.5 degrees on August 9th in Frankfurt. Overall, it was the second warmest August in Hesse. September was extremely sunny, October was then unusually poor in sunshine.
The other weather extremes of the year include minus 7.7 degrees, which were measured on April 1st in Fulda. It has been the coldest day of the month there since 1949. In contrast, it was a lot warmer on February 17th in Schaafheim-Schlierbach (Darmstadt-Dieburg district), where it was 18 degrees at midnight.
