The National Weather Service office in Wilmington, Ohio runs online training for weather observers. A basic course is scheduled for April 18. An advanced course is scheduled for April 30.
SKYWARN observers are volunteers who become the “eyes and ears” of the National Weather Service. Observers serve their communities by acting as a valuable source of information as dangerous storms approach.
The basic course will take place from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on April 18. During the webinar, a National Weather Service meteorologist will teach attendees how to properly identify and report significant weather events that impact the safety of their communities, such as damaging winds. , hail, heavy rain and tornadoes.
The advanced course will take place from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on April 30. This course will discuss severe weather in more detail. Presentations will cover mesoscale analysis, the use of radar to analyze storms, advanced spotting techniques and storm structure, as well as a case study of a severe event from the 2021 season.
The organizers recommend that volunteers take a basic observer training course before taking an advanced course, although it is not mandatory.
It is strongly recommended that attendees join sessions from a computer for full-screen viewing. It’s also a good idea to test your audio abilities beforehand.
