Carnival week begins on Dirty Thursday and ends on Ash Wednesday. A question for many organizers: is the weather in Baden-Württemberg playing along?

Carnival is just around the corner in Baden-Württemberg, the fools in Heilbronn, Stuttgart, Freiburg, Mannheim and other cities are in the starting blocks for the carnival marathon. Dirty Thursday (February 16) kicks things off, and most events end on Ash Wednesday. In this carnival week, the weather should also play along so that costumes and make-up don’t suffer. But how is the weather in Baden-Württemberg?

Baden-Württemberg: The weather on Dirty Thursday

Thursday is probably the nicest day of the week. In Heilbronn and Stuttgart the sun is shining in the largely blue sky. There are up to 13 degrees. Not the announced 16 degrees, as was promised a few days ago, but still: wonderful spring weather at the start of the carnival.

It is probably a bit worse on the Baden side. It remains cloudy in Mannheim on Dirty Thursday, and clouds are also moving through the sky again and again in Freiburg im Breisgau. The temperatures still reach a proud 12 degrees. Arctic cold and polar vortices? No chance.

The weather on Shrove Friday in Baden-Württemberg

The sooty Friday looks different: From Heilbronn via Mannheim to Freiburg it is cloudy, also in the state capital Stuttgart: Clouds in the sky. Temperatures are dropping by two or three degrees everywhere. The only consolation: A hurricane-like storm, like in other parts of Germany, will probably not reach Baden-Württemberg.

But regional rain comes down. In the Breisgau, Freiburg residents have to reckon with umbrellas and capes being taken along on parades and longer distances. Otherwise there is a risk of wet costumes and running make-up if you believe the forecast from “wetter.de”.

Thursday Dirty (also dirty) Thursday
Freitag Sooty Friday
Saturday Schmalzig Saturday (also Carnation Saturday)
Sunday Tulip Sunday
Montag Shrove Monday
Tuesday Mardi Gras or Violet Tuesday
Wednesday Ash Wednesday

The weather on the weekend of carnival week in BW

The weekend picks up where Friday left off: cloud and rain across much of the country. The maximum temperature grabs Stuttgart on Saturday with up to 14 degrees. But that doesn’t change the probability of rain, which in the state capital is only 30 percent. In Heilbronn, on the other hand, there is 70 percent rain, it is said on Tuesday.

Sunday follows the rainy days and lets one or the other child’s dream of a beautiful carnival parade burst like a drop of rain on the window pane. But will the dreary weather continue? Or is there improvement on Shrove Monday in Baden-Württemberg?

Baden-Württemberg: Weather on Shrove Monday and Shrove Tuesday

The temperatures should remain below ten degrees at the beginning of the week in Heilbronn and Freiburg, but also in Stuttgart and Mannheim. But the rain seems to be moving on. Instead, the sun comes out again and welcomes the carnival fans with spring-like weather on Shrove Monday, where one or the other parade takes place.

On Shrove Tuesday, temperatures will rise slightly in Heilbronn and Stuttgart. In Mannheim and Freiburg it remains below ten degrees. In Baden-Württemberg, the sun, which according to the first forecasts will also be enough in the summer of 2023, will continue to be there.

The weather on Ash Wednesday in Baden-Württemberg

At the end of the carnival week, Ash Wednesday, there is a real highlight: it should be 16 degrees in Freiburg, just below that in Stuttgart (15 degrees). Heilbronn has also gotten a bit warmer again with 13 degrees and Mannheim is also crawling over the ten degree mark, according to the “wetter.de” trend for the coming week.

However, the weather forecast for the carnival days is still uncertain, so it can change a bit by the weekend, for example. The weather forecasts for Thursday (sunny) and Friday (rainy) are very likely. What comes after that may have slight deviations.
