Midwinter in spring with a temperature drop of 25°C in 8 days: on Sunday 14 April the thermometer reached 33°C in the shade in the North, Monday 22 April in the Po Valley the maximum temperatures are in the single digits, well below 10 degrees.
The experts on the website www.iLMeteo.it point out that the polar and arctic areas, at the end of the long winter night, are still very cold and below zero, even in April, and can influence the European spring climate.
This year, among other things, Scandinavia has experienced long freezing and record-breaking periods of cold: -44.3°C on 5 January 2024 in Finland and -23°C even in the middle of the city in Oslo, to name two obvious examples.
Snow on the hills
And in recent weeks some of this polar winter cold has managed to resist and, subsequently, to descend in latitude towards Italy: here the Scandinavian irruption has brought snow to the hills and the thermometer to single digits.
And the cold will continue for another 48 hours, also spreading towards the Center and then towards the South. In the next few hours it will be the turn of the entire Center to experience a harsher phase with further snowfalls in the Apennines locally below 1000 metres.
The bad weather will mainly hit the Triveneto with heavy snowfalls in the Alps, the entire central-northern Apennines with other flakes, while the rain will wet the Centre-North including Sardinia until it will involve part of the southern Tyrrhenian during the day.
Thermal collapse also in Sicily
The highest maximum temperatures are expected in Sicily with 26°C, the last bastion of resistance to the Scandinavian sinking. Bulwark that will collapse: Wednesday 24 April the thermal collapse will also reach the south. The maximum will drop below 20 degrees everywhere with a drop of even 10°C in the city of Archimede: in Syracuse it will go from 26 to 16 as if nothing had happened.
Snow will still fall on the Apennines and in the North-East, while a well-structured truce is expected in the North-West: sunny spells will prevail during the day and, if it will be cold in the morning with widespread and dangerous late frosts, during the day we will reach 17- 18 degrees between Piedmont and Lombardy. In the Center and South, umbrellas open onto the Tyrrhenian side and the Major Islands.
From April 25th gradual improvement
Finally, after 3 days of winter, temperatures will rise precisely for Liberation Day, but there will be no shortage of rain. In the morning the weather will be mostly dry, but from the afternoon it will rain in most of the central-southern Tyrrhenian regions, especially close to the mountains.
Il Long weekend of April 25th however, it will be characterized by improvement with even sunny, milder and more pleasant conditions: only in the North-West will we still have widespread rainfall due to a slowly moving disturbance between the Basque Country and Normandy; this cyclone will attract Sirocco currents responsible for rainfall between Liguria, Piedmont and Valle d’Aosta (to be confirmed given the temporal distance).
In summary, we will live 3 days of winter then for the Long weekend of April 25th we will return to savoring spring, with the exception of the regions of North-West Italy dealing with the probable Norman disturbance.
