It feels like January, the scarves, hats and down jackets were quickly taken out after last weekend’s summer break. An extreme change with a temperature drop of at least 17 degrees from North to South. Mattia Gussoni, meteorologist on the website www.ilmeteo.it, confirms among other things that the worst is yet to come: from Monday temperatures will drop further, reaching exceptional values for the period, particularly in the North-West: Monday 22 April, for Earth Day it will feel like living on Saturn, with temperatures up to 10-12°C below the average for the period. On Monday, snow is expected almost up to the ground in Piedmont, with the average snowfall level at 500-600 metres!
An anomalous scenario to be attributed to the intense meridian exchanges of this month of April: by meridian exchanges we mean the flows of air masses North-South, in both directions. Last weekend the direction was South-North with North African air towards Italy and 32-33°C spread; now the flow comes from the North and goes southwards with Scandinavian polar air over our country. Temperatures will remain below average for the period at least until April 25ththen they will tend to go back up.
The cold abyss, the lowest point of the thermal anomaly, is expected in Tuesday e Wednesday when we will be able to find late frosts not only in the North but also locally in the Centre. In detail, the next few hours will see another descent of polar air with thunderstorms, snow and showers towards Romagna and the Middle Adriatic regions, then towards the entire Center and part of the South; Further snowfalls up to 1100 meters are expected in the Apennines, something that rarely happened last winter.
The wind will still blow strongly, especially in Sardinia, but reinforcements are expected across all the Alpine and Apennine mountains, with Foehn gusts on the plains in the North-West. Sunday the weather will improve, partly; especially in the morning we will find large clearings, in a decidedly lively context and with freezing places in the Po Valley. The weather will still be disturbed only on the Adriatic coast, but from the afternoon it will also worsen in the North with the start of a totally winter phase. Winter will fall decisively on Monday on the North-West regions with temperatures even 12°C below average as very rarely happened in the third ten days of April: Monday 22 the snow will fall at low hill levels or almost to the plains; we will be able to write ’22 January’ on the calendar. It will really feel like winter, be careful.
In the Centre-South, however, the sun will prevail with the exception of Tuscany, Umbria and Alte Marche; from the afternoon the clouds will also increase between Sicily and Calabria due to a Libyan disturbance which will also bring some rain. In summary, the start of next week will have our teeth chattering in the North!
To find temperatures more typical of April we will therefore have to wait until the 25th of the month: we will not only celebrate the Liberation of Italy at the end of the Second World War, but also the liberation of our country from the Scandinavian polar cold.
