In the middle of spring, winter returns. The atmospheric configuration of the next three days will have typically winter rather than spring characteristics. It will be cold and it will snow almost down to the plains.
Antonio Sanò, founder of the site www.iLMeteo.it, explains to us what is happening. Arctic air from Scandinavia managed to reach the Mediterranean Sea, generating a cyclone that positioned itself over the Ligurian Sea. In these hours the cyclone is driving a disturbance that causes widespread rainfall across all northern regions.
The phenomena may also appear in the form of a thunderstorm with probable hail. Due to the continuous influx of cold air, temperatures will drastically decrease in the North, especially in the West where they will not exceed 6°C during the day. The snow will therefore fall widespread on the Alps up to hilly altitudes if not also on some stretches of the Piedmont plains, especially in the Cuneo and Asti areas.
The cold disturbance will also affect Tuscany, the Marche and locally Umbria with snow above 1300 metres. From Tuesday the vortex will begin to move slowly towards the Centre, it will rain and snow at low altitude in the North and this time also in most of the central regions with snowfall in the Apennines on average at 1000 metres. The South will wait and enjoy sunny days with even mild weather.
It will be from Wednesday that the vortex will begin to move towards the South, thus involving the South, again the Centre, partially the North-East and, instead, freeing the North-West from the bad weather where the sun and a milder climate will return. Sharp temperature drop also in the Center-South with almost 10°C less than at the beginning of the week.
The situation will undergo a further improvement in conjunction with the long weekend of April 25th. From Thursday 25th the pressure will begin to increase and the African anticyclone will rise from Africa towards our regions.
A certain afternoon instability will remain active with thunderstorms especially in the mountains and areas close to them, while for the weekend of 27-28 the good weather will prevail and the climate will be rather mild in most of the regions.

Monday 22nd. In the north: bad winter weather, snow on the hills. In the center: unstable in Tuscany, upper Umbria and Marche. In the south: sunny and mild.
Tuesday 23. In the north: rain and snow at 800 meters. In the center: showers and snow at 1200 meters. In the south: irregular clouds, mild climate.
Wednesday 24th. In the north: unstable in the Northeast, sunny elsewhere. In the center: unstable with thunderstorms and snow at 900 meters. In the south: gradually more unstable and cooler.
Trend: pressure gradually increasing, improving a little everywhere.
