Weather: early winter 2023

2023 starts a little quieter than late last year, according to meteorologist Terje Alsvik Walløe of the Meteorological Institute.

– So there are still a lot of slippery roads, but generally calm conditions in southern Norway, with little rainfall, Walløe tells Dagbladet.

Crashed in the north

There may still be some precipitation in southern Norway on Sunday, in the form of snow and sleet.

– It will probably come to Agder, coastal areas and a little inland, he says.

But if we go further north, there will be more time.

– There is still a little more storm in the north than in the south, but even there it is calmer on the first day of the year, says the meteorologist.

Winter week

He believes that the whole of Norway is entering a “winter prospect”.

– It will be a rather cold week, with little rainfall at the beginning. But Wednesday there will be some snow in Agder and Telemark – and maybe as far as Oslo, says Walløe and continues:

– Southern Norway is therefore the most exposed to rainfall. Their before the snow and it can get pretty messy.

There will also be some precipitation in Rogaland, but mostly in the form of sleet, as the temperature will be just above freezing.

– But how is the winter weather in Norway? Is there a lot of snow in the country?

– In northern and central Norway there is a lot of snow, as it usually is in January. In Oslo, there is only a thin layer of snow and ice. But if we look at the whole country as a whole, there are quite normal snow conditions, says Walløe and adds:

– Snow isn’t in Western Norway, but it’s also not that common to have snow in cities like Bergen and Stavanger.
