Dresden (dpa / sn) – Spring-like temperatures in the middle of winter: In Saxony, the highest temperatures on a New Year’s Eve since records began have been reported in many places. In Dresden-Strehlen about 16.8 degrees Celsius were measured – the previous record there was 14 degrees in 2017. The German Weather Service (DWD) announced on Saturday. There were 15.3 degrees Celsius each in Leipzig, Hoyerswerda and Kubschütz in Lausitz. There, the highest value measured on New Year’s Eve was around 13 degrees. On the Fichtelberg the temperature was at least 5.6 degrees Celsius and thus just as high as on New Year’s Eve 60 years ago.
On New Year’s Day it was a bit cooler with up to 13.5 degrees Celsius in Dresden-Strehlen, but still unusually mild. For Sunday, the DWD expects an emerging south-westerly wind, which can be stormy at high altitudes and west of the Elbe. In the night of Monday the wind is expected to be fresher and it could rain all over Saxony. “In the night of Wednesday the temperatures drop significantly,” said a DWD spokesman on Saturday. Snowfall is possible in the Ore Mountains. It gets very uncomfortable.
