A violent storm is just sweeping over Hawaii. The reason for this is a seasonal cyclone that brought rain and wind as well as snow to the paradise island at the weekend.

Summer, sun, sunshine – these terms are often associated with tropical regions such as Thailand or Hawaii. It’s warm all year round, isn’t it? Not quite. Images from Hawaii show just the opposite, where the islanders struggle with rain, storm and even snow.

State of emergency in Hawaii

The reason for this is a violent storm that is just sweeping over Hawaii. People are currently struggling with floods and power outages. On Monday evening, Governor David Ige declared a state of emergency for all islands of the US state in the Pacific, as reported by AP News. Warnings were issued at the weekend: The population should stay at home and, at most, leave the house in emergencies.

In addition, the National Weather Service of the USA (NWS) issued a snow storm warning, which, however, only affected the summit regions of the Pacific state. Because there are high mountains where snow is basically nothing unusual. Around 30 centimeters of snow fell on the 4,205-meter-high Mauna Kea during the hurricane gusts. Still, according to CNN, it’s been three and a half years since the NWS issued a warning in Hawaii. Even in the skiing capital of the United States, Denver, Colorado, there is less snow, as reported by CNN.

Kona low as the reason

A seasonal cyclone called the Kona Low is responsible for the weather chaos on Paradise Island. Every few years in winter, heavy rain and cold spells hit the Pacific state. “Kona lows tend to move slowly, so heavy rains and thunderstorms can be concentrated in one area for long periods of time, and they can also cause quite high winds,” said Robert Ballard, meteorologist of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, how AP News reports.
