Weather Alert: Orange Alert issued for central and northern areas of Tuscany

Worsening of the weather conditions since the evening of today, Saturday 4 November, which led the Regional Civil Protection Operations Room to issue an orange alert code on the central northern areas of Tuscany from 8pm until midnight tomorrow due to hydraulic risk on the main grid, for hydraulic hydrogeological risk on the minor grid and for storm surge risk. Rain, including thunderstorms, is expected initially in the provinces of Massa Carrara and Lucca.

Furthermore, from next midnight the orange alert for storm surges will be extended to the southern coast and the archipelago.

The yellow code was instead issued for all the remaining areas of the Region.

The provinces affected by the orange alert are Massa Carrara, Lucca, Livorno, Pisa, Pistoia, Florence, Prato, Grosseto.

Expected phenomena:

RAIN – since today’s evening scattered rainfall, including thunderstorms, initially in the province of Massa-Carrara and Lucca, rapidly extending during the night to the rest of the region, especially the inland areas. Improvement already during the morning with cessation of precipitation in the northern areas and residual showers and thunderstorms that will linger in the provinces of Grosseto, Siena and Arezzo, where they may also be intense and persistent.
The following cumulative amounts are expected between today’s evening and the first part of tomorrow: averages around 50-70 mm and maximums up to 80-100 mm in the provinces of Massa-Carrara and Lucca, locally higher in the Apennine mountains. Average cumulative amounts of 30-40 mm with maximums of up to 40-50 mm in the upper Livorno area, the province of Pistoia, Prato and lower Valdarno and Mugello, up to 70-80 mm in the Apennine mountains. Average cumulative values ​​around 20-30 mm in the central and southern internal areas and maximums up to 40-60 mm, up to 70-80 mm in the Apennine areas and on the Amiata.

THUNDERSTORMS – possibility of local thunderstorms, even of strong intensity, from today’s evening, Saturday, in the north-west areas. During the night and in the early hours of the morning, local strong thunderstorms are also possible in the rest of the region.

WIND – today, Saturday, intensification of the wind from the south, south-west in the evening with gusts up to 80-100 km/h in the Archipelago, coastal areas, Apennine ridges and leeward areas and also on the central-southern hilly reliefs. Gusts up to 50-60 km/h on the plains. From tomorrow morning, Sunday, rotation to the west, south-west with gusts still up to 100 km/h on the Apennines and leeward areas, up to 80-90 km/h on the central-northern coast and on the archipelago north of ‘Elba. Gusts up to 50-60 km/h in the rest of the region.

SEA – from late evening today, Saturday, wave motion increasing in all sectors. Tomorrow, Sunday, rough or very rough seas north of Elba and temporarily also on the southern sector. Strong storms on the coast. Significant wave height up to 4-5 meters offshore, 3-4 meters below the coast. Swell motion attenuating in the afternoon south of Elba.
