This fact, which once was part of the culture, is now considered by some to be fashionable, assigning it a host of meanings. Which means that, rightly or wrongly, women or girls are considered prostitutes.

Ankle bracelets are very popular jewelry items for women all over the world. Originating in Africa precisely from Egypt, ankle bracelets have conquered the hearts of women of all cultures. Now used as assets of seduction, ornaments to embellish themselves, they are worn by many women who are unaware of their hidden codes and meanings. The anklet was initially a sign of identification and belonging to a social group, family, clan, etc.

This is the case of the Fulani community where wealthy women wore more. The number of jewels and their market value embodied their social class. Similarly, Kassena women receive anklets for dowry. It also embodies a protective force for some people. Indeed, in many cultures, this bracelet worn on the left foot is the symbol of a talisman. What makes this accessory an amulet that offers protection against diseases and bad omens. “Among the people of the Southwest, this bracelet is made with coris and is generally worn by the possessed”, makes us hear Amina, assumed name.

“Wearing foot bracelets is not synonymous with prostitution, as we often see married women wearing them,” says Abdoul Tarnagda. Nowadays, certain social constraints mean that the wearing of these bracelets is attributed to a category of people. This is how all people wearing bracelets on their feet are seen as prostitutes giving a pejorative image to this practice. “Wearing bracelets on the ankles does not have a good image, wearing them tends to attract men”, selon Kevin Bationo.

This is explained by the fact that many maquis girls and prostitutes have monopolized the wearing of ankle bracelets. And that tends to demotivate many people who want to indulge in this practice in order to spice up their relationship.
