Weak rule of law, a challenge to face in Mexico: Zedillo

Mexico City. Next Sunday, former President Ernesto Zedillo will give the opening speech at the Opening Ceremony of the 2024 Annual Conference of the International Bar Association (IBA), and in a video recorded for this meeting, the former president stated that “it has long been observed that the weakness of the rule of law is one of the main obstacles that most Latin American countries must overcome to achieve full development. Regrettably, this is also the case in Mexico.”

The conference will take place from September 15 to 20 at the Citi Banamex Center in Mexico City and, according to the organizers, “will bring together thousands of legal professionals, business leaders, government representatives and regulators from more than 100 countries.”

The IBA released the video in which Zedillo “recorded a speech in which he spoke about the importance of the rule of law, particularly with regard to the economic development of a country.”

The IBA information states that the former Mexican president, who governed from 1994 to 2000, is a member of The Elders, “an independent group of global leaders who use their collective experience and influence in pursuit of peace, justice and human rights around the world. In 2020, Zedillo was asked to serve on the Independent Panel on Pandemic Preparedness and Response (IPPPR), mandated by the World Health Assembly to analyze the early emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, its global spread, its health, economic and social impacts, and how it was controlled and mitigated.”

In his message, Zedillo maintains that “at a time when the value and validity of both international and national laws are being questioned in many parts of the world, it is extremely relevant that the International Bar Association chooses Mexico City for its annual conference.”
