“We won’t be world champions”: Nagelsmann makes urgent appeal to the Bundesliga

The first two international matches after the European Championships at home are encouraging. But the national coach makes a surprising appeal to the clubs of his national players. He needs support.

Julian Nagelsmann has emphatically asked the national team’s clubs for help in achieving his big goals as national coach. “In the end, even as a national coach, you have to say with humility that we need the clubs. Training here won’t make us world champions or anything else,” said the 37-year-old after the national team’s 2-2 draw in the Nations League in the Netherlands.

Nagelsmann, who coached FC Bayern Munich, RB Leipzig and TSG Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga before his DFB job, is hoping for an unusual collaboration between clubs and the DFB team. “We can create a good atmosphere here and communicate a few things. In the end, however, we are dependent on the clubs to ensure that the players play there and stay in the flow and are supported,” said the national coach.

Nagelsmann wants to join forces between clubs and DFB

After almost a year in office at the DFB, Nagelsmann reiterated his previously expressed opinion that the lack of training sessions during international matches meant he had little opportunity to learn many tactical things in depth. “In the end, I choose the best and try to develop nuances. The time alone here is difficult. We all need clubs where our players are. They are all in good hands there, otherwise they would not have been invited,” said Nagelsmann.
