The Orionids are back, promising views of a spectacular meteor shower this weekend. According to a recent report from the American Meteor Society, stargazers can look forward to the skies starting Sunday (October 20) and continuing into the coming week, Salon reported.
Still, the American Meteor Society says that fans of meteor showers can remain satisfied despite this obstacle.
The Orionids pass by and/or enter Earth’s atmosphere at 66 km per second, or about 238,000 km/h. As a result, they put on quite a show, with the Orionids known for their bright colors and speed.
Astronomy buffs are already trading tips on the best way to observe everything.
“In 2024, the Orionids meteor shower will shed its largest number of meteorites on the mornings of October 20 and 21. The morning of October 21 could bring the richest picture of meteors,” EarthSky.org reported.
NASA urges stargazers to wait until after midnight, then find a location away from light pollution (especially urban areas or those with street lights). After finding a comfortable position, stargazers must spend half an hour or more lying on their backs and looking up. Those located in the Northern Hemisphere should face southeast, and those in the Southern Hemisphere should face northeast.
