Spain: epidemic killed more than 18,000
The number of daily coronavirus-related deaths has increased in Spain, where an additional 567 deaths have been recorded in 24 hours, bringing the toll of the epidemic to 18,056 deaths, according to figures announced Tuesday by the Ministry of Health . Spanish authorities reported on Monday 517 more deaths than the previous day.
The daily increase in the number of confirmed cases of contamination, on the other hand, reached a lowest since March 18, with 3,045 new infections recorded between Monday and Tuesday, for a total of 172,541, it was announced in a press release disseminated by the ministry. Spain also has 67,504 patients cured.
Authorities believe the peak of the pandemic has been crossed since the 950 daily deaths recorded on April 2. Spain entered its second month of strict confinement on Tuesday until midnight on April 25. But the head of government Pedro Sanchez has already warned that he should probably extend it.
Some of the workers have returned to factories and construction sites and millions of masks are distributed to them in stations to prevent public transport from spreading the virus, giving new impetus to the contagion. Containment is one of the strictest in Europe: only the purchase of food and medicine or a short walk with the dog justifies leaving the house and there is no question of letting the children go out.
The government estimates that 67% of Spaniards do not set foot outside, according to the Minister of Transport José Luis Abalos.
