“We will go all the way, even if it turns into a ZAD”: 150 opponents of the A154 project demonstrate in front of the Chartres prefecture

“No to the highway, we don’t want it”, chanted, this Friday, July 1, the demonstrators gathered in front of the prefecture of Eure-et-Loir, place de la République, in Chartres.

150 people (residents of several municipalities affected by the route of the A154, elected officials, trade unionists, members of associations of opponents of the project, etc.) met, around 9 a.m., to make their voices heard , while the first meeting of the steering committee for the A154 motorway project is being held on Friday morning, between Nonancourt (Eure), north of Eure-et-Loir, and Allaines, on the borders of Loiret.

The motorway project, officially launched in 2010, reached a new stage at the beginning of the year, with the call for applications for the concession of this future traffic axis.

“What is the legal structure of this steering committee to which we have not been invited? We wonder what it is for”, asks François Bordes, vice-president of the Eure-et-Loir Environment Federation (FEEL) , which brings together a dozen associations opposed to the motorway project.

For the demonstrators, the fight is not over, even if the declaration of public utility (DUP) for the concession of the current RN154 and RN12, was signed in July 2018 by Élisabeth Borne, current Prime Minister, who was then Minister of Transport.

A154 in Eure-et-Loir: the motorway choice finally confirmed

“The call for tenders includes the concession of the RN 12, between Dreux and Houdan, whereas this was not planned in the initial public inquiry. Law firms are examining the different forms of recourse which are still possible”, explains François Bordes. “We will go all the way, even if at some point it turns into ZAD (Zone to defend, Editor’s note), as in Notre-Dame-des-Landes.”

Martine Carré, president of the Saint-Prest environment association, is worried about the consequences of the construction of a viaduct over 600 meters long in the Eure valley. “In Gasville, the viaduct will pass 100 meters from homes. We have been denouncing the project for fourteen years. As long as it is not abandoned, we will not let go.”

Demonstrators arrested the deputy Guillaume Kasbarian (Renaissance) on his arrival in front of the prefecture. “I have not received an agenda for this steering committee,” lamented the parliamentarian. “I am not here to debate for or against the motorway, but I have questions to ask the State and the motorway companies. We must have answers on the overall cost of the project, the projections tariffs or environmental impacts.”
