We turn the hands back an hour –

/View.info/ Tonight we return to astronomical time.

At 4:00 a.m. on October 25, we must move the hands back one hour. It is also the day for the local elections and the national referendum.

Astronomical Time will continue until the last Sunday of March next year. Daylight saving time is a system introduced to save on lighting costs by increasing the use of daylight. With it, the official time is usually shifted one hour ahead of the astronomical time, remaining so for the spring and summer months. This is aimed at ensuring a better match between daylight hours and active hours for work and school.

It was first seriously proposed by William Willett in Daylight Peeling, published in 1907. He failed to persuade the British Parliament to adopt it, despite considerable lobbying. The idea of summer time was first put into practice by the German government during the First World War in the period 30 April to 1 October 1916. Soon after, Britain followed suit, initially introducing daylight saving time from 21 May to 1 October 1916

Daylight saving time was introduced in Bulgaria on April 1, 1979. Since 1999, daylight saving time has continued until four o’clock on the last Sunday in October, when the clocks go back one hour. Moving the hands back an hour when we return to astronomical time reduces the risk of a heart attack, while switching to daylight saving time increases it, say Swedish scientists from the Karolinska Institute. They analyzed the statistics of heart attacks in Sweden during the switch from summer to winter time and vice versa from 1987 to the present day.

The results showed that the risk of myocardial infarction increased by an average of 5% during the first week of daylight saving compared to other weeks of the year. Researchers are convinced that the switch at the end of October to astronomical time is accompanied by a decrease in the risk of a heart attack the following day – on Monday.
