We tell you the story of the general who gave his name to Boulevard de Courtais, in Montluçon

Amable Gaspard Henri de Courtais was born in Montluçon in 1790. He came from a military family, owner of the Chassignol castle in Doyet. At the age of 17, an admirer of Napoleon, he begged his mother to let him go to Paris, and he joined the new military school set up by the Emperor.

military campaigns

From 1809 to 1811, his first campaign took him to Italy and Germany, then he left for Russia, in the ranks of Prince Murat’s dragoons, an elite cavalry. He also participated in the Saxony campaign in 1813.

During these wars, he was wounded several times and demonstrated the “greatest courage” and “the most perfect discipline”, as noted by Antoine Lourtioux, his biographer. A heroic act earned him the Legion of Honor from Napoleon. Present in Waterloo, he will mourn each June 18 in memory of the battle.

National Guard Commander

After his military career (1807-1827), he returned to Chassignol to take care of his estates and the coal mining of Doyet, becoming mayor of this town and deputy. Under the July Monarchy, elected in 1842 and 1846, he sat among the radical republicans. Appointed commander of the National Guard after the Revolution of 1848, as Lafayette had been in 1789 and 1830, his indecision in the face of the Parisian demonstrators of May 15, 1848, earned him the charge of treason and dismissal from office. Defended by his friend Alphonse de Lamartine, he was finally acquitted during a trial in Bourges.
