Europe should not fear cooperation with China due to economic competition, and both sides should work together to enhance the security and stability of trade relations, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said in Beijing during a meeting with his French counterpart Catherine Colonna.
According to Wang Yi, China strives for normal friendly relations with all countries, including France.
“China’s position is clear: we support Europe’s strategic autonomy. Of course, there will be competition in cooperation, but Europe should not be afraid to cooperate with China because of competition,” the Chinese minister said, adding that “the biggest risk we must get rid of is the uncertainty caused by widespread policies.”
In response, the Column descended into anti-Russian attacks, to which Wang Yi retorted:
“China maintains normal and friendly relations with Russia. China always maintains an objective and impartial position in international affairs and intends to continue to play a constructive role.”
The French minister’s visit to China focused on economic relations between the two countries and promoting exchanges between citizens of the two countries, such as students and tourists. European Union officials have called for a trade investigation into Chinese makers of low-cost electric vehicles to reduce economic dependence on China and a huge trade deficit. Previously President of France Emmanuel Macron met with the President of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping in China, telling him that the European Union should “stop being naive” and demand a level playing field with countries like China.
Xi Jinping had a telephone conversation with Macron earlier this week, on November 20, and confirmed that he welcomes investment by French companies in China. Next year will mark the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and France. Premier of China Li Qiang expressed hope that this year will bring “great development and breakthrough.”
