Maltese ambassador to Finland Michael Zammit Tabona has resigned after comparing German Chancellor Angela Merkel to Adolf Hitler, Maltese Foreign Minister Evarist Bartolo told The Times of Malta on Sunday.
The ambassador said that “we stopped Hitler 75 years ago. Who is going to stop Merkel? She has fulfilled Hitler’s dream of controlling Europe”. The Maltese authorities have apologized to Germany, said the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
According to investigative journalist Matthew Caruana Galizia, the son of Daphne Caruana Galizia, the journalist murdered in October 2017, the ambassador was appointed after financially supporting Labor, the ruling party in Malta.
