The Dutch are still ordering more groceries, meals and baskets than before the corona crisis. While growth has slowed slightly from recent years, food and grocery deliveries are up about 5 percent this year.
When people couldn’t go to restaurants during the corona lockdowns, the sector still grew by 52 and 29 percent, reports the FoodService Institute Netherlands (FSIN).
The fact that the sector has grown less is mainly due to the meal delivery market. It’s shrunk more than 4% this year. This was mainly because people were able to eat in restaurants again.
Grocery delivery has grown more than 12% this year. This is also much less than in previous years. This is not only due to the reopening of restaurants. High inflation has also caused people to order less. According to the FSIN, people ordered less groceries, especially in the second half of the year.
Delivery supermarkets like Picnic and Crisp are doing particularly well. But flash delivery companies like Gorillas and Getir also contributed to the growth. According to FSIN, 2022 was the first full year that flash delivery services were active in the Netherlands.
