“We should not judge” the past “with the eyes of the present”: Spain to Sheinbaum

Madrid. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Spanish government, the socialist José Manuel Albares, responded to the request made yesterday by the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, that a public pardon be issued by the Spanish State for the abuses during the Conquest and the colonial era.

And the position of the Iberian Executive, chaired by the socialist Pedro Sánchez, “is already known,” according to the Spanish leader, who confirmed that it remains intact, maintaining that “we should not judge” the past “with the eyes of the present.” .

Minister Albares, in an interview on the Catalan radio station RAC1referred to the request of the Mexican President as follows: “I believe that there are two levels regarding these comments. Our position is known; I believe that we should not judge what happened five centuries ago with the eyes of the present. Each one is a man of his time and the government of Spain is men and women of our time.

I believe that we must look and build on the future, so regarding those comments our position is clear.”

The Spanish politician added that “then there is the relationship between two brother peoples, between the Spanish people and the Mexican people, and the strength and dynamism of that relationship. With thousands and thousands of Spaniards living in Mexico, and thousands and thousands of Mexicans, and more and more, living in Spain.

Very important investments in Mexico from Spain and vice versa, cultural exchanges, a common language such as Spanish, we are part of the same community, such as the Ibero-American one. So much harmony on so many global issues that currently affect us, such as multilateralism, peace, the fight against climate change. All of this continues and is reinforced every day normally and I promote it as Minister of Foreign Affairs of Spain.”
