“We say no to any attempt to rebuild the Soviet Union,” says Hungary’s new president

Budapest’s refusal to supply Ukraine with arms and its opposition to the European Union’s (EU) ban on Russian oil imports have undermined its close relations with Warsaw.

“We condemn [Krievijas diktatora Vladimira] Putin’s aggression. We say eternal no to any efforts aimed at rebuilding the Soviet Union, “Novak emphasized in his inaugural address.

She added that the war against Ukraine was at the same time a war against peace-loving Hungarians, and demanded that the war crimes committed by the Russians be investigated and the perpetrators punished.

Until now, Novaka represented the ruling Conservative party in Fidesz’s parliament and was a contributor to Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

She was elected president in March, shortly before the April 3 parliamentary elections, in which Fidesz won a convincing victory, giving Orban another term as prime minister.

Novaka is the first woman in the presidency of Hungary. She had previously held the position of Vice-Chair of Fidesz and was Minister for Family Affairs in the previous Orbán government.

Orban has also condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, but has avoided criticizing Putin personally. He also strongly opposed the imposition of sanctions on Russian energy imports.
