We ripen later in tennis, says Kolář. He has finally risen up this year

He was a talented player with the Czech team during the DC quarter-finals with France in Třinec in 2016, and at the age of 20 he received an invitation to the match in Australia next season, even though he did not make it to the court. After years of trampling on the spot, the player trained by his father in 2021 set out.

“This year I can beat quality opponents for several days in a row. Before that I won over one, maximum two. But now I can manage more difficult matches in a row,” said Kolář.

This was immediately reflected in the title of challenger in Oeiras, Portugal, which he followed up in Iasi, Romania, and then in Szczecin.

“Until then, I haven’t won a challenger yet, so it was an extremely amazing moment for me. In addition, I turned off the matchword in the first round (with the Portuguese Borges) and then reached the title,” Kolář appreciated.

Like Novák with Štěpánek?

It would not be bad for the Davis Cup team to meet the Czech specifics, which is the later maturation of talented tennis players. After all, Jiří Novák and Radek Štěpánek also started to climb the singles rank at the age of twenty-four.

“The boys generally mature later, I’m also this type. For example, the southern states have more advanced players at a young age than we are in Central Europe. At least that’s how it seems to me,” says Kolář.

“But this year I managed to break what I had been waiting for for four years. I really appreciate it, but it’s not free. I have to work hard to repeat the results,” he planned.

However, he would rather avoid the current comparison of Czech men’s tennis with successful tennis players. “It doesn’t listen very well,” he admits.

From Thursday, however, the Czechs in Austria will have the opportunity to show that the prospects for the future may not be black at all. “We are a great group with the boys, we complement each other perfectly. The group with France and Britain is very difficult, but nowadays everyone can be defeated,” said Kolář.
