We may have even worse time to cut emissions than the Climate Panel said this autumn

In August, the UN Secretary-General proclaimed “code red” for humanity. New research shows that the situation can be even worse.

Normally, almost all sea ice around Antarctica melts in the summer. From 2000 to 2015, the area that froze increased in the winter. But from 2016, that trend reversed abruptly.

Norwegian-Finnish research shows that the emission cuts will probably have to happen even faster than the UN assumed when they pressed the red button this autumn.

The climate panel’s latest report frightened many. Rapid and massive cuts in emissions are the only way to slow down warming to around 1.5 degrees, the researchers wrote. We are at 1.1 degrees now.
