3rd extract from our Big Interview which was to be published in issue 77 of We Love Tennis Mag. Emmanuel Planque tells us about his work with Fiona Ferro that many fans discovered during the last edition of Roland-Garros.
Everyone praises Fiona’s attitude. We know that she was surrounded by a loving, hard-working family, whom her brothers played tennis. What is the place that the family soil occupies in the construction of an athlete? How does the coach use his values?
Education is the essential foundation without which nothing is possible. Fiona’s relationship to work is a prime example of the values transmitted through education. I take advantage of it daily. The respect she has for her profession is also a family heritagel.
When I asked a renowned coach what he thought of the Planque / Ferro team, he replied: “If they continue to work like this, they will go far. Fiona is the only French player who will soon be able to win Grand Slam tournaments. Do you take that as a compliment? A threat ? Don’t you take it into account?
First of all, even if I don’t know which coach it is, I want to say thank you. We know what we are working for, we are tracking progress. This is what gives meaning to our action. If this leads Fiona to achieve great things, so much the better! Is it a source of pressure? No, because we claim the right to failure as well as the right to success. We know the path will be winding. We know how to recognize the different signs along the road and we try to be as responsive and “remedial” as possible.
