We lose half a billion euros if we sell the equipment for “Belene” – 2024-08-05 23:11:50

/ world today news/ The state will lose half a billion euros if it sells the equipment for the “Belene” NPP, Ivan Hinovski, chairman of the Bulgarian Energy Forum, said in the “12+3” program on BNR. We are against such a hasty decision, given the prospects, Ivan Hinovski also said. According to him, the purchased equipment for the Belene NPP can be used in the next 20 years without a problem.

Iran is building an expansion of its Bushehr nuclear power plant with a new reactor, and they would most likely be interested in buying already manufactured equipment. However, Bulgaria would lose a lot of money from the sale, Ivan Hinovski explained in the show.

A government delegation went to Iran to explore the country’s interest in the Belene NPP reactor. The sale is one of the options after Bulgaria was sentenced by the arbitration court in Geneva to pay 550 million euros to Russia’s Atomstroyexport.

Hinovski pointed out that buying old equipment for nuclear power plants is practiced all over the world, but Bulgaria is the champion:

For the second time, we will be selling equipment purchased from us at a loss. The first time was when we paid for the first reactors for the Belene NPP, which Atomstroyexport took back and put into a Russian plant, but we sold them for nothing, at a huge loss. Now the same scenario is taking shape.

He is categorical that the reactor cannot be installed at the site of the 3rd and 4th units of the Kozloduy NPP, but a new reactor can be installed next to the 5th and 6th units.

A good option that should be analyzed is to build one or two blocks with the equipment for the Belene NPP there. This is the better option and has many advantages. This project can no longer be a government project, it must be a corporate project. But this requires a lot of skills and knowledge from the state administration, commented Ivan Hinovski.

He also said that currently the real price of the equipment is twice what the state paid to Atomstroyexport:

This equipment is worth more than 1 billion euros. If we sell it for the amount we pay to Atomstroyexport, we will lose half a billion.

Only in 15-20 years, Bulgaria will be forced to build a nuclear unit, as a base power, because then we will not have the 5th and 6th units. Then we will not have a large part of our thermal power plants, which will be closed under international conventions to protect the air and to fight climate change. And suddenly, after 20 years, we will drastically lose generating capacities. A nuclear project is built between 12 and 15 years, so we have to start organizing after 1 year, pointed out the chairman of the Bulgarian Energy Forum.
