Lima. Transport leaders completed this Thursday a second day of protests against extortion and crime in Lima, headquarters of the economic forum of the Asia Pacific countries, the same day that Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in the city and when the American Joe Biden.
“We want the international community to know that they are killing us, there is no policy to fight head-on against organized crime and citizen insecurity,” Walter Carrera, president of the National Association of Transporters (Asotrani), told AFP.
At least 200 protesters arrived near the convention center hosting the APEC summit, on the sidelines of which President Joe Biden and his Chinese counterpart will meet on Saturday.
“Day after day they extort us, we are already tired of that. Peru does not have a good international image that is why we are here,” Madeleine Rojas, 50, a housewife, told AFP.
The protesters, mainly unions of transporters and merchants, have been asking, since September, for security measures in the Peruvian capital in the face of the wave of extortion and the murder of four drivers so far this year.
They also demand the resignation of the president of Peru, Dina Boluarte, who on Thursday accompanies the Chinese leader at the inauguration of the port of Chancay.
The demonstrations will continue until Friday, when the leaders’ meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (APEC) begins, which brings together leaders from 21 economies.
Meanwhile, in Lima the government activated a contingent of 13,000 police officers to guarantee the security of the international meeting.
At the request of the Executive, Congress authorized last Thursday the temporary entry of up to 600 United States soldiers to support surveillance efforts.
