“We have to decide if we want to live together or continue in the conflict”

The president of the Generalitat, Ximo Puig, defended this Tuesday that the reform of the crime of sedition is “the correct line” because “it is a matter of deciding whether we want to live together or if we want to remain in conflict and litigation”, while on the crime of embezzlement he advocated waiting to see in what terms his amendment to the penal code is foreseen.

Puig, in statements to the media, underlined in this regard that “the path to coexistence is always dialogue” while “remaining entrenched in confrontation can serve electorally but they are votes tainted with unworthiness”.

In this regard, he stressed that this reform “must be framed in a situation of reunion of coexistence and relationship between Catalonia and all of Spain” and in this sense he underlined: “Now we are much better off than we were in times of rupture and fracture”.

This is why he opted for “we must go in that direction” and also underlined that if this reform “helps to Europeanise this crime” it is “the right line”.

Puig stressed that within the rule of law “we must understand ourselves as we are, not as someone would like the other to be” because “Spain is a plural nation, which has a diversity of languages, cultures and ways of understanding Spain”. “The Spain of Spains is the one that supports diversity, plurality and believes in a common project, but for this we must want who we are”.

On the other hand, regarding the reform of the crime of embezzlement, he specified that “we need to see under what conditions it occurs”. “Respect for sedition is a step in the right direction but compared to other penal code reforms it needs to be seen,” she added.
