Estonian officials said on Wednesday that a third wave of Covid-19 had begun in the country, although the number of people infected has so far been relatively small.
“The Delta variant is widespread. At the beginning of June, the delta option was 8 to 10 percent of all cases, but now it is already 80% and more, ” reports Ullars Lanno, Director General of the Estonian Department of Health.
During the past day, 56 new cases of Covid-19 infection were registered in Estonia, reports ERR.ee.
Lanno predicts that if the growth continues at the current rate, then in mid – August there will already be 150 infections per day, but in September this figure could reach 250.
Irja Lutsara, an adviser to the Estonian government, emphasizes that the best way to combat the spread of Covid-19 is to vaccinate the population.
“We know that vaccines are not perfect, and vaccinated people can get sick too. However, they receive a much lower dose of the virus. Vaccinated people need to understand that first-generation vaccines are not ideal, so vaccinated people should also take all precautions, ”says Lutsara.
She adds that young people should not be too worried about the health effects of the vaccine, for example, alcohol abuse is a much bigger health threat.
In Estonia, 588,000 people have received at least one dose of Covid-19 and 500,000 have been fully vaccinated.
