“We have an enormous difficulty in pronouncing people’s names, an enormous difficulty in communicating” – O Jornal Económico

Health authorities admit that the diversification of the population in some parishes of Lisbon and municipalities in the metropolitan area of the capital is hampering communication, placing obstacles in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.

“People like me, who have experience calling to determine isolations, and in many cases, especially in Lisbon, we have an enormous difficulty in pronouncing people’s names, an enormous difficulty often in communicating”, started by Rui Portugal, coordinator from the Covid-19 response office for the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region.

“Lisbon, as the capital of a country, has its own specificities: in municipalities with more than 100 nationalities as residents, who are very welcome and we like this diversity very much, but that puts its challenges”, said the official today in the usual daily press conference of health officials.

“This office is preparing an effective and equitable response to these challenges,” he said.

As he highlighted, the metropolitan area of Lisbon has “very specific characteristics: high population density and an enormous population diversification”.

The Directorate-General for Health (DGS) announced today that in the last 24 hours Portugal had registered 266 more positive cases of Covid-19 for a total of 41,912, and another four fatalities, for a total of 1,564 deaths.
