90 seconds until midnight, the symbolic moment when Earth will become uninhabitable. This became clear after the “Doomsday Clock” was adjusted on Tuesday.
The decision to set the clock was made by the Bulletin of the Atomic Physicists, an organization that since 1947 has been measuring the time until the complete destruction of the Earth as a result of human actions.
90 seconds is the shortest time the Doomsday Clock has measured. In the last 2 years he clocked 100 seconds. The reduction of humanity’s time on Earth is largely due to the war in Ukraine, the Bulletin explained.
The decision to set the clock is made by 13 Nobel laureates who sit on the board of the Bulletin of the Atomic Physicists.
“Russia’s thinly veiled threats to use nuclear weapons have reminded the world that, whether by accident or on purpose, as the conflict escalates, the risk is enormous,” the board said in a statement announcing the clock reset. Additionally, the war is undermining efforts to tackle the climate crisis, another major threat to Earth, the organization found.
