“We had to organize ourselves very quickly”

Émilie Moninhas, director and teacher at the Maison Blanche nursery and elementary school in Reims saw her upset organization with measures to close schools. In just 48 hours, she had to organize everything for the 161 students of the establishment. From this Tuesday, the lessons will be remote for the students.

How did you organize yourself for your teachers in the face of the coming week of teleworking?

We had to organize ourselves very quickly. The inspectorate asked us to do material things: give students books, notebooks and avoid dematerialization. That is to say things online, because we have children who have difficulties and do not necessarily have the digital material. It was therefore necessary to organize ourselves to create a work plan so that parents can best support their children and that it is the easiest for them.

So there won’t be a lot of video lessons?

There may be some, it all depends on the age of the children, you have to know how to adapt to our audience. We are classified as a priority education zone, we have parents who do not necessarily have the necessary equipment to make videos, they only have a telephone and not necessarily a computer. You have to adapt to your audience and the age of the children. In kindergarten, making visios does not necessarily make sense, while making phone calls may have more.

How is it going to go concretely?

We were asked to keep in touch with the families. It could be a call every day or even a return from exercise. You have to keep in touch with the kids to really think of it as a work week.

As these courses will be on paper, will parents have to take the place of the role of teacher?

We tried to do as much as possible on our own. We are not on new achievements, we will be on revision, reinvestment things so children can do things independently, the majority of teachers have bet on this.

Afterwards, it’s true that in kindergarten, we mainly work in the form of games, so we tried to give game boards with dice to build yourself for parents who don’t have any. There, inevitably there will be more support from parents, it will be necessary to play with the children, to read them stories. There is no choice, the parents take the place of the teacher. That’s why our role is to keep in touch with them, to support them as well as possible.

How did you prepare?

It was very fast, in my case personally from Wednesday evening, I was already considering things in my head then, we had to organize for the photocopies and as director there is all the administrative part of the information parents and there is also all the reception of children of priority personnel. We got the information on this on Thursday evening at 9 p.m.
