We guess what winter will be like today, the church honors a great confessor – 2024-11-06 05:48:00

On November 6, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of Saint Paul the Confessor, Archbishop of Constantinople.

Paul was born in Thessalonica at the beginning of the 4th century. Mlad entered the clergy of the church at a young age and was even the secretary of the saint Archbishop Alexander (celebrated on August 30). When Alexander died in 337, Paul was elected in his place as archbishop. At that time, the heresy of the Alexandrian priest Arius was already spreading, who taught that God the Son is not identical with God the Father, but is His creation.

Many Christians and especially high clerics became followers of Arius. And the most serious test for the Church was that a series of emperors and many dignitaries of the empire in the capital and in the provinces also supported Arianism. So was Constantius II, the son of Saint Constantine the Great. He took power after his father’s death in 337 and openly declared himself in favor of the Arians. That is why he was indignant when he learned that the Orthodox Paul was chosen as archbishop. And while his father took part in ecclesiastical affairs to aid in the Christianization of the peoples of the vast empire, Constantius intervened harshly to enforce a heresy.

During the election of Archbishop Paul Constantius was in Antioch, Syria, but as soon as he returned to the capital, he deposed Paul from the archbishopric throne and arbitrarily proclaimed the Arian Eusebius of Nicomedia as archbishop.

Saint Paul went to seek support in Rome, where there was another exile – Saint Athanasius the Great, whom Constantius also removed from the Church of Alexandria. The Western Emperor Constant learned of these persecutions against the worthy archbishops and interceded for them before his brother Constantius. The two were restored, but in 350 Constantius died and Constantius immediately exiled Archbishop Paul to Armenia, where Arians attacked and strangled him in the temple during a divine service. This happened in 351.
