While Square Enix originally planned to present new footage of Final Fantasy 16 on PS5 by the end of 2021, Covid is said to have disrupted communication and working methods for the team and the producer of the game Naoki Yoshida announced that the presentation will be postponed.
“In our last conversation, I promised that I would have more information on Final Fantasy XVI later in 2021.“Yoshida wrote on Twitter.”However, I regret to inform you that I will not be able to keep this promise, as complications from the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic have delayed the game’s development by almost six months..”
Apparently, the fact that the team is not grouped together in a central location has had an impact on development and is the cause of the delay. “This unfortunately hampered communication from the Tokyo office, resulting in delays – or in extreme cases, cancellations – in asset deliveries from our external partners.“Yoshida said.
Delays are expected for Final Fantasy, but it could be worse …
As of yet, there is no definitive release date for Final Fantasy 16, which makes sense given how little we know about the game.
Fans have speculated that the game could be released in the middle of 2022 – somewhere around June of next year – but that now appears to be a very uncertain eventuality.
That said, the games in the main Final Fantasy series rarely come out so close to each other. Final Fantasy XV was released in 2016, while its non-MMORPG predecessor – Final Fantasy XIII – was released in 2009.
With an interval of around seven years between each modern release, Final Fantasy 16 could see the light of day in 2023 or even 2024.
