Concert of Elina Garančas and friends in Dzintari concert hall
One of the most beautiful collaborations of opera singer Elina Garanča and conductor Karel Mark Šišon is “Classics under the stars”, “Classics in the Alps”, which gathers fans of their talent in Austria every year at the beginning of July. Since 2016, Elīna Garanča and friends have established this tradition of summer opera music also in Latvia, in the Dzintari concert hall. This year, Garanča has brought bright opera singers of the new generation to Jurmala. The charismatic, Chilean-born, New York-raised Jonathan Tetelman, known as the unique tenor, and the new star of opera, the Spanish soprano Marina Monso will be the guests of this special concert. The most beautiful arias of Italian operas, Spanish lyrical and dramatic zarzuela songs and South American melodies will be heard.

Open-air cinema on a big screen
Cinema classics are smiling on the edge of a cloud, because cinema classics have become the hits of this summer. Of course, let Baz Luhrmann’s new one also get its share of happy audiences for the movie “Elvis”, but cinema distributors and exhibitors are happy about the in-demand screenings of cinema classics this summer. Since the world began to celebrate the round anniversaries of its favorite films (Amelia (already 21), Basic Instinct (40), 81/2 and The Sweet Life, in honor of Federico Fellini’s centenary), the “good old” films around the world currently in serious competition with new cinema. “Splendid Garden” offers classics on the big screen after sunset. But the “Positivus” festival, which will start on July 15 in Lucavsala, offers not only a magnificent musical program, but also the “Kino Bizes” Cinema Tent, where, alongside the first films of young Latvian directors, a special place is given to well-researched cinema classics. I vote for John Travolta in a white suit on a white screen “Saturday Night Fever” (1977).

“Melo-M” Mega Orchestra
The orchestra of more than 80 cellists on the Mežaparka Grand Stage is something challenging and certainly musically disturbing even for professional musicians, as they will also give place on stage to young talents, cello music students. This orchestra will play together with percussionists Miķeli Vīti and Mārtiņa Miļevski. How does the popular music from the Song Festival repertoire sound when performed by a cello orchestra? The concert includes arrangements by Mārtiņš Braun, Jānis Lūsēns, Imantas Kalniņas, as well as pieces from the repertoire of world musicians “The Beatles”, Marilyn Manson, “Pink Floyd”, adapted for cello orchestra. Surprises are promised, and the premiere of Kārlis Auzāns’ composition “Together we can” has been announced. Latvia not only sings and watches movies, but also demonstrates the power of cello music in an unprecedented big concert on July 16.
